Or knowing when someone is upset by the way they're carrying themselves.
I think the benefit of possessing the skill of reading body language is to knowing how to keep oneself out of harms way for the most part. There are some people who isn't capable of reading body language. I think this little experiment shows that we are very expressive species and that we cannot go without having the correct tools to communicate with what we need and want. Because I had to talk with a mono-tonic voice I could tell that he wasn't interested in what I was saying, nor did I keep his attention for too long. He's used to me talking with in great detail and over the top expressions. During this experiment, my partner was affected heavily. The fact that I am so animated and over the top with talking majority of the time just made it very difficult to sit there and talk with no care or feeling.
I gave three attempts to try and last the full 15 minutes just talking. Those who can interact from both spoken and non spoken communities have a great deal of patience trying to figure out what the other is saying and how they can get on the same page as one another. In our culture, we have the Deaf community that has a difficult time communicating with the spoken culture. I feel like the speaking community attitude towards the culture that doesn't use symbolic interaction might be a little impatient only because they are used to receiving reactions and responses to the things they say. I think the culture who is able to speak has the advantage in communicating complex ideas. In order to understand me without speaking, my partner had to alter his way of communication. Then as the minutes went by, it seemed like our conversation was becoming easier.
At first, my partner's impressions were slightly confusing. I felt like an infant that couldn't communicate about what I had wanted/needed.
